Doubt Without a Scale of Proportion explores the intricacies and ambiguities of self-doubt and memory. The expansive paintings are a vessel for enquiry – Lotte’s works depict the dialogue between their internal and external worlds. They look at the interplay between the familiarity and the unfamiliar, in a visual language that is at once gentle and vulnerable.
Lotte approaches this through varied mediums. Oil pastels add depth and texture, which enables the works to query the felt and unexpected elements of memory, doubt, and relational experience.
Additionally, the works are accompanied by Lotte’s written thoughts. The two mediums are in conversation - Frances’ writing influences the distorted marks, movements, and colours in their paintings. Similarly, the paintings influence their word choice and imagery. The dance between mediums embodies Lottes’ playful self-exploration, personifying how the self is in dialogue with the world around it.
